Recently, Allegheny Design Services worked with IKM Incorporated to design the structural engineering component of a hospital addition in Weston, West Virginia.

William R. Sharpe, Jr. Hospital is a 150 bed acute care psychiatric facility that offers a wide range of services to patients either committed to the hospital through civil commitment or, in the case of forensic patients, ordered through the judicial system.  Sharpe Hospital has emerged as a premier center for mental health education as well as research in the state of West Virginia.

The addition is featured in the December issue of the Daily Briefing‘s Architectural Design Showcase, which features 12 facilities that focus on behavioral health services.

Architects from both IKM and ADS designed the behavioral health addition to support the hospital’s forensic initiative. The design features enclosed courtyards that allow nursing staff to maintain visibility as patients move freely between the interior and exterior of the facility.

Structural Engineering is a field of engineering dealing with the analysis and design of structures that support or resist loads. Structural engineers create complex structural systems through the use of simple components.

ADS works closely with architects and contractors to provide the engineering support that turn their vision into reality.

The large expanses and dynamic visual cues of modern architectural design often require unique engineering solutions to maintain structural integrity while providing the vision the architect wants to achieve. ADS is the link between the architect’s design, the contractor’s finished structure and the owner’s satisfaction.

Though based out of North Central West Virginia, ADS has performed work for many clients in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Tennessee and Washington D.C. Over 80% of their clients are repeat customers.

“We pride ourselves in offering timely solutions to complicated engineering issues, whether structural, mechanical, electrical or plumbing in nature.”
